Executive's Camp Devotional

Sing pg 239 Choose the Right

Call on some one to give a prayer.

I have the best recipe for chocolate chip cookies. It is to die for. Soft on the inside and just the right amount of crunch. Perfect to dunk in a tall cold glass of milk. I brought some with me. Who would like the first one?...... (Invite an individual from the audience to come and have the example cookie.)

Heavenly Father has blessed me with the ability to act for myself. I chose to dump a ton of extra salt into the cookie dough. How much better would these cookies have tasted if I would have followed the recipe?

Heavenly Father has given us a recipe to have a happy life which we know as the gospel. He reinforces this plan for us in many ways, through parents, teachers, leaders, bishops, prophets, scriptures, friends, and prayer to name several. Now that we have “the recipe” and our agency it is up to us to combine them and use them for our good the way that he has asked us to.

In D&C 82:10 (assign a junior leader to read the scripture.) we are told of a promise, a way to bind the Lord to protect us. Does that mean that we will have smooth sailing if we follow the recipe? Not necessarily. (Have a junior leader look up D&C 58:2 and read aloud.) Even in tribulation we must be obedient quickly. It reminds me of the primary song “When my mother calls me, quickly I obey”. Which is exactly what we need to do for our Heavenly Father, because it is for our safety and happiness that he created the recipe in the first place.

In his 2002 talk called “Models to Follow”, President Monson tells the story of Ruth. (Assign a junior leader to read the quote.)

Because Ruth was obedient one of her biggest blessings was becoming an ancestor to Christ. (Bare your testimony of how living an obedient life will bless you and your posterity here and in the eternities to come.)

Quotes and Scriptures:

A model of ideal womanhood is Ruth. Sensing the grief-stricken heart of her mother-in-law Naomi—who suffered the loss of each of her two fine sons—feeling perhaps the pangs of despair and loneliness that plagued the very soul of Naomi, Ruth uttered what has become that classic statement of loyalty: “Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.” Ruth’s actions demonstrated the sincerity of her words.

Through Ruth’s undeviating loyalty to Naomi, she was to marry Boaz, by which she—the foreigner and Moabite convert—became a great-grandmother of David and, therefore, an ancestor of our Savior Jesus Christ.-Thomas S. Monson

D&C 58:2 -For verily I say unto you, blessed is he that akeepeth my commandments, whether in life or in bdeath; and he that is cfaithful in dtribulation, the ereward of the same is greater in the kingdom of heaven.

D&C 82:10- I, the Lord, am abound when ye do what I say; but when ye do not what I say, ye have no bpromise
